Genes, Chromosomes and Cancer
About 70 scientists recently attended the conference on " Aneuploidy and Cancer " in Oakland, CA, which was organized by P. Duesberg and D. Rasnick from the University of California, Berkeley, and generously sponsored by philanthropist Robert Leppo. The conference explored whether aneuploidy, i.e., specific ge-nomic imbalances, is a driving force behind the development of cancer. A century ago ...
متن کاملConnecting chromosomes, crisis, and cancer.
Cancer is a disease of impaired genome stability. The molecular forces that maintain genome integrity and sense altered chromosome structure are invariably subverted in cancer cells. Here, we explore the contrasting contributions of telomeres in the initiation and suppression of cancer and review the evidence supporting a role for telomere dysfunction as a mechanism driving the radical chromoso...
متن کاملChromosomes and Cancer, Boveri Revisited
Already in the late 19th century, the link between chromosomal aberrations and the pathogenesis of cancer was described by von Hanssemann [9]. Moreover, as early as the first decade of the 20th century the German zoologist Theodor Boveri developed a genetic theory of cancer based on these chromosomal aberrations [3]. Until quite recently, these ideas have received only limited attention and foc...
متن کاملChromosomes of human cancer cells.
Obvious mitotic abnormalities have long been known to occur very commonly in malignant tumours, but as a result of recent improvements in technique much more reliable cytogenetic observations are now possible. Transplantable tumours were the first to be accurately examined, and these were found to consist of populations of cells with variations around a modal (" stemline ") type which differs i...
متن کاملCancer Genomes Evolve by Pulverizing Single Chromosomes
A report in this issue describes "chromothripsis," a new mechanism for genetic instability in cancer cells. Chromothripsis appears to be a cataclysmic event in which a single chromosome is fragmented and then reassembled. The phenomenon raises important questions of how chromosome rearrangements can be confined to defined genome segments.
